The song starts off with a four bar intro that just includes drums, bass and a shaker. On the fifth bar it comes in with the guitar playing the main riff and the synth playing single notes in the background, the drums, bass and shaker still playing. Then the vocals come in, followed later by the trumpet in the verse and the synth carries on throughout the whole song.
It’s in AABA form, starting with an intro, verse 1, pre-chorus, chorus, verse 2, pre-chorus, chorus, verse 3, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, chorus, bridge and then the last chorus.
Arranging techniques:
The song has a straight flowing rhythm and an up beat tempo that makes it good to dance to. The dynamics go from being quiet in the verses to been raised louder in the chorus’ and so on like this throughout the song, the bridge dynamics are also quiet and get louder building up to the chorus again.
The tone of the song is very clean and rich and everything is clear to the listener. Each instrument is heard clearly. The song is at a good pitch and listeners would find it easy to sing along to. The backing vocals throughout the song give the song warmth and fullness and they are at the same pitch as the main vocal.
The way the instruments and the vocals are grouped, from the brass to the guitar and bass, they all work together well and give the song a grooving feel, and the straight flowing beat from the drums gives the song its rhythm, and the vocals give the song its melody.
The lyrical content is telling a story about someone who just wants to start trouble, this shows in the line ‘you wanna be starting something’, and also ‘Billie Jean Is Always Talkin'
When Nobody Else Is Talkin' Tellin' Lies And Rubbin' Shoulders
So They Called Her Mouth A Motor’. The backing vocals emphasizing on the lyric ‘you’re a vegetable’, ‘and I hate you’ shows that this part really wanted to be heard.

Billie jean was one of Michael Jackson’s hit singles in 1982. The lyrics were written by Michael Jackson and the music was produced by Quincy Jones.
The structure:
The song starts off with the drums and then comes in with the most famous baseline in the world. Then comes the vocals and the synth. The structure consists of intro, verse1, pre-chorus, chorus, verse 2, pre-chorus, chorus, verse 3, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, pre-chorus, chorus and ends with an outro.

All of the instruments are synthesized and the instruments consist of drums, bass, strings and brass. The dynamics of the song are good as in the verses they are lowered and on the chorus everything comes in with a higher dynamic but with the vocals sitting on top, still been the main focus. The melodies and riffs are all very simple but at the same time very effective.

The tempo is at a good pace and gives it the heart beating kind of feel making you feel it in your soul to dance to it. The bass line carried out throughout the song gives it depth and the synth playing the single notes gives a sound of suspense and you can tell that he’s telling a story.
The backing vocals give the pre-chorus and chorus a fuller sound and carry on building up that suspense. As the dynamics are raised during the chorus it adds to the fullness.

The lyrics tell a story of a woman that was clearly obsessed with Michael Jackson and this is actually a real life experience Michael had. The lyrics ‘Billie jean is not my lover’, and ‘the kid is not my son’ show that Michael was trying to get the message across to this fan that he’s not the one.

Thriller was another one of Michael Jackson’s big sellers. It was released in 1983 and the video is one of the most popular music videos in the world of music.
The instrumentation in thriller is similar to Billie jean including drums, bass and synth strings. The structure of the song is a typical pop song (AABA). There are harmonies used in the chorus to thicken the sound.
The dynamics are low in the first verse and start rising getting closer to the chorus and then on the chorus they are raised slighty.
The songs provides a sense of fear, the underlying
rythmic element creates that. The listener doesn’t know what to expect next. The vocals are clear over the instrumentation and clear.
The tempo is at a good speed with its disco feel it makes good dancing music. The drum rhythm is straight all the way through. The bass line remains throughout the song still providing that suspense.

The lyrics tell a horror story, he starts off saying ‘it’s close to midnight, something evils lurking in the dark’, straight away the listener is intrigued and in suspense. Then in the chorus he say’s ‘coz this is thriller’ the dark atmosphere carries on. The backing vocals make parts of the song stand out and are heard more. The song gives the listener a true horror experience with the slamming doors, and screaming effects this lets the listener’s imagination run free to experience the thriller. The song ends with Vincent price howling an evil laugh and it leaves you with chills and that horror vibe still lingering on.

Human nature like thriller was also released in 1983 as the fifth single from the thriller album.
Instruments in this song are synthesizers, strings, bass, guitar and vocals.
This song is more of a ballad unlike the other songs. The tempo is slower and the music is sweeter. The strings and synth give it a warm affect. The vocals are a lot softer on this track and that’s what gives it its ballad sound. The bass playing single notes has a soothing sound. The backing vocals come in on the chorus and are very effective as they make it full. Reverb is added in the chorus and echo is added to the vocals to emphasise that intimate feeling.
The song is very intimate and it shows that Michael wanted to break free from everything that was going on in his life at that moment. For example ‘get me out into the night time’. He really expresses his feelings and connects with the listener. The distinctive melody line carries on throughout the song.
The dynamics are on the same level throughout the song but it seems in the chorus when the backing vocals come in that it’s getting louder, but the song has a soft feel all the way through.
The structure of the song is similar to the other songs such as thriller and Billie jean.

The song starts off with vocals and synth and hi hat. Then it kicks in to drums and bass and carrying on the synth and vocals. It has a very disco beat and makes you want to dance.
The backing vocals in the pre-chorus give it a full sound. The dynamics are the same all the way through. The vocals are very clear over the instrumentation.
The structure is quite simple, verse 1, pre-chorus, chorus, verse2, pre-chorus, chorus, instrumental/bridge, pre-chorus, chorus and ends with an outro consisting of Michaels vocals talking and the instruments fading out.
The bass line is carried on throughout the song giving it a grooving feel. The chord sequence on the synth is the same throughout the song but is not used in the verses but comes in in the chorus. The drum beat stays the same up to the end, giving a simple straight rhythm in 4/4 time. It is a very 80’s pop song and would have been very effective to young people of that time.
It is quite clear from the lyrics what this song is about. He is singing about a woman that he wants to be with, e.g. ‘I want to love you’, ‘you need some lovin’. This shows the caring side of Michael Jackson that many of his fans would of fallen in love with.

Thriller
Baby be mine

Baby be mine released in 1982 track 2 on the thriller album. This song has a disco/pop type feel.
The time signature of this song is in 4/4. The tempo is quite up beat but slow enough to just sit down and listen to. It has a straight rhythm that has a disco type groove to it with some elements of motown in the vocals. He uses his chest voice to reach the high notes and there are also uses of vibrato.
The instruments conclude of vocals, backing vocals, guitar, bass, synth (trumpet/brass) and drums. The instrumentation works well together and you can tell it was all very well thought out.The backing vocals provide harmonies in the verse but mainly the chorus using thirds and fifths.
The structure is in AABA format which is basic verse, chorus, verse, bridge and chorus, and it ends by fading out. I think the fading out is very effective because it keeps the song lingering on in your head when it had finished.
In this song the lyrical content is clearly about love. He is talking about being in love and what it feels like. A lyrical example in this song would be ‘I don’t need no dreams when I’m by your side’ and ‘show you all the magic that a perfect love can’. The lyrics, I feel are very effective, to the female fans especially but also to the male fans too because they may feel like they can relate to this about someone.

The girl is mine, recorded in 1982 was a duet with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. The song was a huge hit at the time as it sold 1.3billion copies.
This song starts off with an intro with guitar, drums, synth, woodwind, brass instruments and bass. All these instruments build up more throughout the song with the different roles they play.
It is a slow paced tempo song which has a ballad type feel. The instruments used give it a full sound in the chorus. The dynamics are very effective as the verses are quiet and in the chorus the dynamics are raised.
The backing vocals used in the chorus add to the fullness and rich texture of the song by providing harmonisation. Once again the song fades out to give that lingering effect.
The lyrics are perfect for a duet as Paul and Michael are fighting over a girl ‘the girl is mine’ and the lyrics act as if they are singing an argument, this makes it interesting for the listener.
